Amazon Prime Video celebrates Black History Month with some of the best History Month movies on Hulu this year. These include TV series and films that highlight the struggles and achievements of African Americans.

It’s so much fun to commemorate Black History Month. It’s a time to reflect on Black heroes’ incredible achievements throughout history, from renowned musicians like James Brown to modern-day activists like Angela Davis.

What’s better than reading Black authors, shopping from Black companies, and, most importantly, binge-watching various black history month movies on Hulu?

That offers insight into the Black experience and how we can pay tribute to these greats. Well, some of the best black history month movies on Hulu to binge-watch are;

1. Bad Hair (2020)

An ambitious young woman from Compton, L.A., aspires to be a VJ during the rise of New Jack Swing in 1989.

But she is told she doesn’t have the right hair, face, or skin color to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television.

Additionally, she makes a Faustian deal with the new head of a music network, who advises her to get a weave.

But this new haircut proves challenging to manage. Beto Benites, Zaria Kelley, Corinne Massiah, and Moses Stor are the top cast of bad hair.

2. Harriet (2019)

Harriet is one of the best Black History Month movies on Hulu. It narrates the incredible story of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and metamorphosis into one of America’s greatest heroines.

It is based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter.

Additionally, her bravery, creativity, and tenacity liberated hundreds of enslaved people and altered the course of history. Some top cast include Janelle Monáe, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Joe Alwyn.

3. Brian Banks (2018)

Brian Banks, an All-American high school football player going to USC, has his life turned upside down when he is wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit.

Banks is sentenced to a decade in prison and probation by a broken justice system despite the lack of evidence.

Years later, Banks tries to restore his life and realize his aspirations of playing in the NFL with the help of Justin Brooks and the California Innocence Project. Melanie Liburd, Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear, Sherri Shepherd, and the top cast.

4. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)

If Beale Street Could Talk is next on our list of the best black history month movies. Fonny and Tish are two African-American teen sweethearts.

They were torn apart after Fonny was falsely accused of raping a Puerto Rican woman due to the manipulations of a racist cop.

Additionally, Tish, who is pregnant, seeks justice for Fonny with the help of her Harlem community, which includes her sister, mother, Sharon, and future mother-in-law.

In addition, some of the top cast include KiKi Layne, Stephan James, Colman Domingo, Teyonah Parris, Michael Beach, and Dave Franco.

5. Fast Colors (2018)

When a woman’s superhuman talents are uncovered after years of hiding, she is compelled to flee. Furthermore, after abandoning her family for years, the only place she has left to hide is at home.

In addition, some of the top cast include Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, Saniyya Sidney, Christopher Denham, and David Strathairn.

6. Becoming (2020)

Anyone who enjoys Michelle Obama should have read her memoir and seen the documentary.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I can assure you that it is everything you could hope for and more. It’s a love letter from and to former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Becoming follows her as she encounters adoring fans, young women trying to follow in her footsteps, and family members who let loose around her on her sold-out national book tour for her 2018 biography.

Additionally, you go to her childhood home and watch how she overcame adversity, met a young guy named Barack, and blossomed into the incredible lady she is today.

7. Detroit (2017)

Detroit is also one of the must-watch black history month movies on Hulu. In 1967, a police raid in Detroit culminated in one of the most significant racial riots in US history.

In addition, the plot revolves around the Algiers Motel event, which occurred on July 25, 1967, during the racially violent 12th Street Riot in Detroit, Michigan.

Furthermore, three black men were killed, and nine other people were brutally beaten: seven black men and two white women. Meanwhile, some top cast include Jason Mitchell, John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, and Jacob Latimore.

8. Marshall (2017)

Thurgood Marshall was a young lawyer for the NAACP in 1940 who traveled throughout the country defending innocent African Americans from unjust court prosecutions. 

Nevertheless, in his most recent case, an African-American chauffeur is accused of raping a wealthy white woman in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

After Marshall’s protests, insurance lawyer Sam Friedman was chosen to make court introductions and help admit Marshall to the local bar.

Friedman’s devotion, however, shifts dramatically when a racist judge prohibits Marshall from speaking in court, forcing Friedman to serve as primary counsel.

Additionally, Marshall must now assist his new comrade through this criminal trial, which is an awful scenario for the two.

At the same time, Friedman faces this unknown area of law and the discriminatory pressure he now must share. Some of the top cast include Sterling K. Brown, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, and Dan Stevens.

9. Strong Island (2017)

Strong Island is also one of Hulu’s best black history month movies. Furthermore, this documentary examines the brutal killing of the filmmaker’s brother and the court system that let his killer go free. 

It interrogates murderous fear and racist perception and reimagines the destruction left in the disaster’s aftermath, urging us to change. In addition, some of the top cast members include Yance Ford, Harvey Walker, Lauren Ford, and Kevin Myers.

10. Southside With You (2016)

The film depicts the summer afternoon in 1989 when Barack Obama, the future President of the United States, wooed Michelle Obama, his future First Lady, on a first date through Chicago’s South Side.

Some of the top cast include Tika Sumpter, Parker Sawyers, and Vanessa Bell Calloway.

11. You Laugh, But It’s True (2011)

Trevor Noah, a South African stand-up comedian, draws on his experiences growing up in a multiracial household during apartheid to prepare for his first one-person performance.

In addition, some of the top cast include Trevor Noah, Rabin Harduth, Kagiso Ladiga, and Loyiso Gola.

12. Black-ish (2014-2022)

Black-ish is one of the must-watch movies during Black History Month. Dre Johnson has it all: a fantastic job, a beautiful wife, Rainbow, four children, and a large house in a nice neighborhood.

Nevertheless, as a Black man, he wonders if his family’s cultural integration has gone too far.

Additionally, Dre tries to instill a sense of ethnic identity in his family members with the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne).

Furthermore, this allows them to honor their heritage while preparing them to embrace the future.

13. Your Attention Please (2020)

Craig Robinson, the show’s host, takes us on a trip through the lives, thoughts, and dreams of various Black entrepreneurs and creators making a difference in the world.

Some of the top cast include Craig Robinson, Asia Kaleem, Tomi Adeyemi, and Isaiah Richardson.

14. These Ones for the Ladies (2018)

This film examines contemporary black America’s sexual and social identity through personal, eye-opening, and often funny experiences from women and men who find love and camaraderie in the underground world of exotic dancing.

Some of the top cast include Michele Moore, Lakia Hunter, Poundcake, Terrill Rose, Tamisha, and Tarik Sanders.

15. The United States Vs. Billed Holidays (2021)

Last on our list of best black history movies is The United States vs. Billed Holidays. The Federal Bureau of Narcotics targets the holiday with an undercover sting operation conducted by black Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher, with whom she has a rocky relationship. 

In addition, some of the top cast include Day, Andra Trevante Rhodes, Garrett Hedlund, Leslie Jordan, Miss Lawrence, and Adriane Lenox.
