Second, on my list of black family movies on NetFlix is Holiday Rush- which is a comedy about a widowed father losing his radio show and must uproot his family from their mansion and move into a more modest house.

To make matters worse, he finds himself having to work for his nemesis to keep them afloat financially. The lead character, Rush Williams, is played by Romany Malco (The 40-Year Old Virgin). 

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)

Third, on my list of black family movies on NetFlix is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom- which is a fantastic film. It’s set in Chicago in 1927 and features the legendary singer, songwriter, and actress Ma Rainey (played by Violas Davis).

Ma Rainey was one of the earliest African-American professional blues singers and significantly influenced artists like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday.

This movie tells her story through music and drama. The film is based on August Wilson’s play of the same name. The top cast also Incudes the late Chadwick Boseman.

Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History (2019)

Their eventual arrest for being a mixed-race couple in Virginia in 1958 led to their legal battle against the state’s ban on interracial marriage before the Supreme Court overturned it. In 2018, it was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

He also helped launch the careers of Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and Aretha Franklin. In recent years, Avant has been recognized by President Barack Obama with the National Medal of Arts Award from the White House (2014) and by former President Bill Clinton at The National Urban League Conference (2018). The film includes interviews with Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Quincy Jones, and more!

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

This is the movie that brought Rudy Ray Moore to fame. Eddie Murphy plays Moore, who created the character Dolemite and became a comedy legend in his own right.

In this film, Dolemite is a pimp who raps. He also has Kung Fu skills. Dolemite also has an old friend named J.J., who wants to be a star but can’t seem to find his niche—that is, until he decides he wants to be a rapper too!

This movie is rated R for violence and language; it was initially rated X due to its explicit content (including full-frontal male nudity).

See You Yesterday (2019)

This is the story of two brothers trying to get by in NYC. They live in a rundown apartment, their father is dead, and they have no money.

The older brother makes ends meet by dealing drugs while the younger brother struggles to graduate high school. When he fails a test, his girlfriend decides that they can’t continue seeing each other because it would look bad for her in school if it got out that she was dating someone who was failing classes.

Furthermore, One night at dinner, the older brother’s girlfriend tells him she needs to break up with him but she wants to try one last thing before ending things: an experiment where they don’t contact each other for 24 hours so she can see how long it takes for him to realize how good he has it with her.

The next day we see them both doing their own thing: one goes shopping at Bloomingdale’s while another plays basketball alone outside of Madison Square Garden (MSG).

At some point during this day, they both decide that they need some time away from each other, so they choose to spend some time at home – but when they arrive, there’s something strange going on…

Django Unchained (2012)

Set in the Old West and Antebellum South, it’s the story of Django (Foxx), a slave whose brutal history with his former owner Dr. King Schultz leads him to seek revenge on the man who separated them.

Furthermore, When Django runs into Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), a charming but ruthless plantation owner who owns Broomhilda von Shaft (Washington); well…you can probably figure out what happens next!

Miss Virginia (2019)

Miss Virginia by Uzo Aduba is a heartfelt drama about a struggling single mother fighting to give her son a good education.

When Virginia learns that her son’s school district is failing him because his father has been wrongly sent to prison and denied primary education, she decides to take on the system with some help from her friends.

Furthermore, The film stars Uzo Aduba as Miss Virginia and follows her through the story of trying to get justice for her son’s father.

The movie also features many familiar faces including Regina King, Angela Bassett, Trevante Rhodes, John David Washington, and Aja Naomi King.

Barry (2016)

Barry is a 2016 American film that deals with the complexities of race, class, and identity. The story follows a young Barack Obama during his time as a student at Columbia University. Barry’s experience in New York City leads him to question whether his perceptions about race are valid.

The evening suddenly begins to reveal their relationship by testing the strength of their love. Cast Includes; Zendaya and John David Washington.
