Frequently there are acronyms in the gaming world that a rookie player may have difficulty understanding.

The term DPS is one of them, and so we’ll be breaking it for you.

What is DPS in Gaming?

Simply put, DPS in gaming stands for “Damage per Second,” which is about the level of damage that a game hero is capable of inflicting within a second of gameplay. 

DPS is more dependent on loadout and abilities/skills than on class; it can alter considerably depending on the armament you choose.

It’s calculated by battling a mob or anything similar for five seconds and dividing the total HP lost by five. The Damage Per Second metrics you see in games are usually “optimal,” which means they assume you attack properly for one second.

In the literal sense, it is more commonly used to refer to precise damage output per second. DPS, on the other hand, refers to classes that specialize in doing damage. It can be utilized in the same way that a healer or tank class is identified.

In most games, many classes deal damage and have a DPS, but the majority of games also feature types designed to deal much more damage than others.

In many circles, these are referred to as DPS classes.

Examples of DPS

As a result of splash damage, balanced rockets, and her capacity to concentrate on preys which other team members can’t, Pharah, a security captain who yearns to defend the world’s peace, can dole out enormous Damage Per Second in Overwatch, just like the heroes in her past.

A hero like Mei, on the other hand, does substantially less damage.

Understanding DPS Terms

Burst DPS is a term that refers to damage done in a brief period. When dealing with targets who have low health, high burst damage is the best option. Most classes have at least a few spells or abilities that do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. In PvP scenarios, this form of damage is desirable, although it is usually too expensive or has a long cool down to be sustainable.

Sustained DPS  refers to damage that is dealt with consistently over a long period of time. When dealing with targets with a lot of health, heavy sustained damage is the best option. When properly specked and geared, any class is capable of dealing good sustained damage. As “pure” Damage Per Second classes, Warlocks, Rogues, Mages, and Hunters have the most sustained Damage Per Second.

It’s worth noting that Sustained DPS is best computed on a single-boss fight. Full raid/dungeon DPS factors in AOE damage, considerably increasing your Damage Per Second.
