21 Movies Like American Pie You Should See

Movies Like American Pie

One of the most popular franchises in teen sex comedy history is the American Pie series.

This series has launched the careers of young actors like Sean William Scott and has returned familiar faces like Eugene Levy and Chris Klein to the spotlight.

The movie revived teen sex comedy, and the genre hasn’t been the same ever since.

True, movies like American pie make your dream of becoming a teen again and remind you of those years when scoring chicks was the only goal to achieve.

American Pie was released at a time when teen comedies were popular among moviegoers.

It is hard to believe that the movie was released almost 20 years ago, in 1999.

If you’ve seen all the sequels of the movie (including the 2020 ‘Girls’ Rules’ installment) and can’t get enough of them, then you’ll surely want to know if there are other movies like American Pie.

The answer is that there are tons of options out there, even more so than you probably realize.

Movies Like American pie

There are a lot of movies out there that try to capture the spirit of the American Pie films, but few of them are able to capture that same feel.

So here are a few movies that are worth your time if you’re a fan of the American Pie series.

1. Superbad (2007)

  • Director: Greg Mottola
  • Writers: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg
  • Starring: Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse

When you see a movie that features a comedy gold mine of actors like Seth Rogen, Emma Stone, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (starring as the legendary McLovin), you know you’re in for an absolute treat.

Superbad, which quickly became a cult classic, follows the adventure of three high-school nerds: Seth and Evan, who wanted to increase their chances of getting laid before graduation by throwing a party.

And what’s the one thing that every lit high-school party needs? Booze! Their plan surely goes wrong, especially when they run into two bored cops.

Although the plot isn’t original, it’s still funny to the end. The performance of the lead characters is outstanding. It’s hands down one of the best movies like American pie.

2. The girl next door (2004)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DJMB7oSlts
  • Director: Luke Greenfield
  • Writers: David Wagner, Brent Goldberg, Stuart Blumberg
  • Starring: Emile Hirsch, Nicholas Downs, Elisha Cuthbert

Upon its release in 2004, The Girl Next Door found itself on the wrong side of critics, but it has since then gathered a sort of cult-like following.

It became a favorite – especially among guys – because the movie’s plot is what most guys only dared to experience in their wildest dreams while growing up. Yes, the film offers pure escapist pleasure.

A girl next door is one of those teen sex comedies that stay true to its intended path and never for once deviate from it.

A super hot girl moves into a new neighborhood and captures the heart of an average high-school student living next to her. But everything takes a downturn when he discovers that she used to be a famous pornstar.

This movie is thought-provoking, funny, and even emotional at times. Take note of the actors’ facial expressions while watching this movie; the subtleties in their expressions are outstanding.

3. Accepted (2007)

  • Director: Steve Pink
  • Writers: Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Mark Perez
  • Starring: Justin Long, Jonah Hill, Blake Lively

Accepted is the story of a high-school slacker Bartley Gaines who gets rejected by every college he applies to.

In an attempt not to disappoint his strict father (Mark Derwin), he decides to create his own university called South Harmon Institute of Technology (S.H.I.T.) on an abandoned piece of land in the outskirts of his hometown.

With help from his friends, Bartley creates a fake website for the school and even hired a friend’s uncle to pose as the dean.

Of course, as you can imagine, things get out of control as other slackers across the country state get admitted to the fake school leading to a hilarious and suspense-filled outcome.

4. Old School (2003)

  • Director: Todd Phillips
  • Writers: Court Crandall, Todd Phillips, Scot Armstrong
  • Starring: Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell

Old school is the story of three best friends, Mitch, Bernard, and Frank, who decided to open a fraternity close to their Alma mater so they could relive their college days.

As they try to blend in with college kids and neglect their ‘adult’ responsibilities and obligations, their personal relationships begin to crumble.

As if that wasn’t enough, the college’s villainous dean is out to spoil their fun. Get ready to laugh your ribs off at this coming-of-age movie about people who have already come and gone.

5. Eurotrip (2004)

  • Directors: Jeff Schaffer, Alec Berg, David Mandel
  • Writers: Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, David Mandel
  • Starring: Scott Mechlowicz, Jacob Pitts, Michelle Trachtenberg

Eurotrip is one of the raunchiest and most ridiculous movies like American pie (one of my personal favorites, actually).

When Scott Thomas gets brutally dumped by his girlfriend, he is inspired to travel all the way to Germany to find his pen pal, who he believes to be ‘the love of his life.’ It’s funny, it’s absurd, and yes, there’s sex – all the ingredients you need to make a great teen sex comedy.

Surprisingly, the cast is mainly made up of unknown actors and actresses, but the acting is brilliant.

While we can’t fully say that the story is original, Eurotrip takes almost every stereotype and cliche regarding Europe and blows it out of proportion in an unbelievably funny way.

6. Sex drive (2008)

  • Director: Sean Anders
  • Writers: Sean Anders, John Morris, Andy Behrens
  • Starring: Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew, Clark Duke, Seth Green, James Marsden

High school slacker, Ian, wants to lose his virginity. He meets a lady on the internet who promises him the sex of his life, but the catch is, he has to drive down to Knoxville to get it.

And like any other hyperactive teenager, Ian steals his homophobic, arrogant, and macho elder brother’s G.T.O., together with his two best pals, set out to meet this mysterious ‘Ms. Tasty.’

As expected, the trip doesn’t go as smoothly as they had hoped. Filled with raunchy escapades and hilarious misadventures, the trip teaches the trio a lot about love and life in general.

Although the movie received mixed reviews, it’s still a fan favorite and one of the best movies like American pie.

7. Van Wilder: Party Liaison (2002)

  • Director: Walt Becker
  • Writers: Brent Goldberg, David T. Wagner
  • Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Tara Reid, Tim Matheson, Paul Gleason

Being the most popular student on campus can be difficult, right? Well, not for seventh-year senior Van Wilder, who spends his days attending and throwing the best parties on campus and has no intention of graduating.

But things take a terrible turn when his crush and campus journalist, Gwen Pearson, writes an article about him that brings his party lifestyle to light. This attracts all the wrong attention to him and even resulted in his tuition getting slashed by his angry dad.

With so many distractions, a couple of sinister enemies, and some really crazy sex escapades, watch as Van tries various schemes to make enough money to pay his tuition and graduate.

Will he succeed? You’ll have to see the movie to find out.

8. Road Trip (2000)

  • Director: Todd Phillips
  • Writers: Todd Phillips, Scot Armstrong
  • Starring: Breckin Meyer, Sean William Scott, Amy Smart

Josh is a regular guy who mistakes his little argument with his long-distance girlfriend for a breakup and decides to have a little fun. But his plan goes wrong after his hookup video is mistakenly mailed to his girlfriend.

Determined to intercept the tape, Josh and his friends, Rubin, E.L., and Kyle, have to drive from New York to Texas. The 1800-mile journey turns out to be the biggest adventure of their lives as they are faced with ridiculous obstacles and curveballs.

Road Trip is filled with nudity, crude sexual jokes, and some American Pie casts (Sean William Scott).

But while there’s no Stiffler’s Mum, it’s an excellent choice for people who are into movies like American Pie.

9. The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

  • Director: Judd Apatow
  • Writers: Steve Carell, Judd Apatow
  • Starring: Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd

The 40 year old Virgin is one of the few movies like American pie that found a place in the heart of critics – with a unique storyline, lovable cast, and epic one-liners; who wouldn’t love the movie?

The romantic comedy film is about successful sales clerk Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell), who is criticized by his best friends for being a virgin till 40 years of age.

When he finally falls in love with single mother Trish, will he summon the courage to pop his cherry, or will he remain a virgin till eternity?

The movie features a simple yet fascinating connection between Trish and Andy, making it a more memorable watch.

10. Project X (2012)

  • Director: Nima Nourizadeh
  • Writer: Michael Bacall
  • Starring: Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown

Project X tells the story of three high school teenagers who decides to throw a big party to boost their social status. As you would expect, things get out of hand as the news of the party spreads and draw more attention than they had expected.

This is not a movie you’d want to watch with your family or kids. There’s a lot of drama, drugs, and sex. But you can still decide to showcase the thug in you and air it in family movie night.

The ending is kind of predictable, but so is almost every other movie like American pie. You don’t want such films to have unpredictable endings.

Sadly, this movie isn’t a favorite among critics, but it’s an excellent option to watch if you’re a young adult.

11. Porky’s (1981)

  • Director: Bob Clark
  • Writer: Bob Clark
  • Starring: Kim Cattrall, Scott Colomby, Kaki Hunter, Nancy Parsons, Alex Karras, Susan Clark

Our list won’t be complete without mentioning the movie that gave rise to the teen sex comedy genre. The American Pie series found its inspiration from this movie.

There is nothing classy about this film: the plot doesn’t make much sense, and the actors don’t behave rationally.

To be honest, this movie is more of a guilty pleasure for everyone, especially those who were teenagers in the 1980s, as it teleports them back to their good old college days.

The movie follows the misadventures of four college boys who will do anything to lose their virginity, even if it means sneaking into a brothel to pay for it.

After getting caught, robbed, beaten, and kicked out, the boys cook up a scheme to dastardly revenge on the brothel owner, Porky.

As if that wasn’t enough, their sexual curiosity gets them into more trouble at school when they discover a peephole into the girl’s locker room.

12. Booksmart (2019)

  • Director: Olivia Wilde
  • Writers: Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, Katie Silberman
  • Starring: Kaitlyn Denver, Beanie Feldstein, Jessica Williams

This teen comedy is a bit similar to Superbad but also offers a fresh take on the story of high school seniors who are ready to go into the college world.

Booksmart is about two graduating best friends who discovered that they haven’t been to any party during their high school years because they’ve been so busy studying.

So they decide to attend all the high school graduation parties before parting ways to attend different colleges. Undoubtedly, the crazy night of partying ensures, but there are also touching and heartfelt moments throughout.

The couple reports their new neighbors to the cops, which results in an all-out prank war that erupts to dangerous yet hilarious heights.

The two quickly blend in with the college students, with Jenko joining the football team and hanging out with a fraternity while Schmidt falls for a lady in art classes and mixes with the art student crowd.

Will their newfound interests get in the way of the mission? You have to see the movie to find out.

15. Pitch Perfect (2012)

  • Director: Jason Moore

  • Starring: Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins, Elizabeth Banks

Pitch Perfect is a college musical comedy that centers on the rivalry and odd relationships formed in the collegic acapella world.

Beca is a teenager with a big dream, she wants to skip college and move to Los Angeles to pursue a DJ-ing career, but her father won’t let her until she gives college a shot.

So she enrolls at Barden University and soon finds herself in the middle of a heated rivalry between the college’s two prominent acapella groups.

The all-girls group, the Barden Bellas, have always played second fiddle to the all-male group, Treblemakers; the Bellas’ playlist consist of stale songs, and Becca thinks it’s time to change things.

But while most members agree, the co-captain Aubrey firmly insists that they leave things the way they are. Can they make a comeback this year and win the nationals?

The film includes some stunning acapella performances and some great singing, plus some raunchy and at times grossed-out scenes.

16. Fired Up (2009)

  • Director: Will Gluck
  • Writer: Freedom Jones
  • Starring: Nicholas D’Agosto, Eric Christian Olsen, Sarah Roemer, Molly Sims, Danneel Harris

What’s the acronym for Fired Up? F-U! Nick and Shawn are two popular college football players who prefer getting hot and heavy with the chicks than getting hot and sweaty with the guys.

In turn, they come up with a plan to join cheerleading camp (because they overheard the camp was populated with 300 teen girls) instead of joining their summer football program… How could things go wrong?

Although their plan was successful, they soon encounter the joy and pains that come with first love.

Fired Up is one underrated comedy movie laced with witty humor, slapstick comedy, and fast-paced banter. It’s both original and entertaining.

17. Animal House (1978)

  • Director: John Landis
  • Writers: Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller
  • Starring: John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Verna Bloom, Thomas Hulce, Donald Sutherland

Though the American Pie movie and Animal House are on two polar ends, the movie is worth mentioning as it is the father of the college frat house comedy genre.

It follows the hilarious story of a frat house packed with party animals and oddballs who are in the habit of causing mayhem on campus.

They soon have to fight for the survival of their fraternity against the uppity frats. As if that wasn’t enough on their plate already, they get into serious trouble with the college dean, who is determined to shut them down.

Watch as Shelley transforms the sorority girls’ into the hottest chicks on campus as they get complete makeovers both in appearance and personality.

  • Director: Amy Heckerling
  • Writer: Cameron Crowe
  • Starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Brian Backer, Robert Romanus, Ray Walston

This is a classic and relatable college comedy that exposes the stereotypical ins and outs of a 1980s school year in Carolina.

With a couple of standalone storylines throughout, including slackers VS uptight teachers, losing virginity, and love triangles, each plot is unique and hilariously entertaining.

With the prominent theme of drugs and sex, the movie has no shortage of rock n roll. Apart from the movie’s exceptional lineup of star-studded casts, the best part of the movie will be the electric soundtrack.

20. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

  • Director: Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont
  • Writers: Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont
  • Starring: Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green, Jennifer Love Hewitt

Can’t Hardly Wait is centered around a group of friends who decide to get high and get laid after their exams. Of course, the plan goes horribly wrong.

This teen movie doesn’t appeal to an older audience and is clearly targeted at younger audiences. Its sole purpose is to entertain the audience (which it clearly excels at), so don’t look for any profound message in the movie.

With a strong ensemble cast and an entertaining plot, Can’t Hardly Wait solidifies its position as one of the best movies like American pie.

21. The Late Bloomer (2016)

  • Director: Kevin Pollak

The Late Bloomer is actually an adaptation of the autobiography of journalist Ken Baker titled Man Made: A Memoir of My Body, where he tells the story of how he experienced puberty for the first time at age 27.

The humorous adaptation takes us into the world of successful sex therapist Dr. Pete Newmans whose practice is centered on helping people redirect their sexual impulses.

He soon discovers that he has a long-term pituitary tumor which has suppressed his testosterone production and inhibited his onset of puberty for 15 years.

After undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, Peter experiences what would normally be years of puberty in a matter of weeks. Although it wasn’t a favorite among critics, The Late Bloomer is a fun and entertaining movie to watch.
